CornwasfirstgrowninMexicoabout9,000yearsagofromawildgrasscalledteosinte,accordingtoPiperno,whoseresearchhasbeenpublishedinthejournalProceedingsoftheNationalAcademyofSciences.Afewthousandyearslater,cornwasbroughttoSouthAmerica,wherefarmersbredtheplantcropintohundredsofvarieties.
Indeed,whatsurprisedPipernomostaboutthenewresearchwasthediversityofcorn—fromcorncobshapestokernel(玉米粒)colorsdiscoveredinthenew-foundremains.“Farmersliketoexperimentandgrowcoolthings,”shesaid.
