Thesecurityexchanges,ontheotherhand,aremeetingplaceswherestocksandbondsaretraded.Likethecommodityexchanges,theyhelpservetheeconomiclifeofthecountry.Butwhentheiroperationsgetoutofhand,theymaybecomeverydangerous.In1929,thesecurityexchanges,orstockmarket,contributedtoacrash-asudden,sharpdeclineinthevalueofsecurities.Manypeoplelostfortunes;manycorporationswerebankrupted;manyworkerslosttheirjobs.TheCrashof1929hasbeenattributedtomanycauses,amongthemwildandunwisespeculationbymanypeopleanddishonestpracticesonthepartofsomebusinessmenandofsomemembersoftheexchanges.
Today,however,investingthroughsecurityexchangesandtradingoncommodityexchangeshasbeenmadesaferbyregulationssetupbytheexchangesthemselvesandbyregulationsoftheUnitedStatesgovernmentin1992,thegovernmentinstitutedtheCommodityExchangeCommissionwhichoperatesthroughtheDepartmentofAgriculture;andin1934,theSecuritiesandExchangeCommission,toprotectinvestorsandthepublicagainstdishonestpracticeintheexchanges.
