ThevastregionsofNorthAmericahadlongbeeninhabitedbyAboriginalpeoples-thenativeIndians.TheEuropeandiscoveryofCanadacanbetracedbacktotheendofthe15thcentury.JacquesCartier,sailedrightdowntheStLawrenceRiverasfaraswhatistodaythesiteofMontreal.FailingtofindthewaytoAsiahewasseeking,heopenedtheinteriorofCanadatoFrenchfurtradersandlatercolonizers.TheEnglishandFrenchColonialConflictsTheEnglishandFrenchbecamerivalsinthegradualconquestofthosepartsofNorthAmericanotclaimedbytheSpanish.ThroughtheseventeenthcenturytheFrenchcolonizedthebanksoftheSt.Lawrence,theGreatLakes,theinlandplainsandtheMississippiValley.TheEnglishestablishedlargerandbettersettlementsintheirNewEnglandcoloniesandVirginia.Bythemiddleofthe18thcentury,theFrenchinNorthAmericarealisedthattheycouldnot
