IhavespentmostofmylifeasaDemocrat.Irecentlyhaveseenfittofollowanothercourse.Ibelievethattheissuesconfrontinguscrosspartylines.Now,onesideinthiscampaignhasbeentellingusthattheissuesofthiselectionarethemaintenanceofpeaceandprosperity.Thelinehasbeenused,Weveneverhaditsogood.
ButIhaveanuncomfortablefeelingthatthisprosperityisntsomethingonwhichwecanbaseourhopesforthefuture.Nonationinhistoryhaseversurvivedataxburdenthatreachedathirdofitsnationalincome.Today,37centsoutofeverydollarearnedinthiscountryisthetaxcollectorsshare,andyetourgovernmentcontinuestospend17milliondollarsadaymorethanthegovernmenttakesin.Wehaventbalancedourbudget28outofthelast34years.Weveraisedourdebtlimitthreetimesinthelasttwelvemonths,andnowournationaldebtisoneandahalftimesbiggerthanallthecombineddebtsofallthenationsoftheworld.Wehave15billiondollarsingoldinourtreasury;wedontownanounce.Foreigndollarclaimsare27.3billiondollars.Andwevejusthadannouncedthatthedollarof1939willnowpurchase45centsinitstotalvalue.
Asforthepeacethatwewouldpreserve,IwonderwhoamonguswouldliketoapproachthewifeormotherwhosehusbandorsonhasdiedinSouthVietnamandaskthemiftheythinkthisisapeacethatshouldbemaintainedindefinitely.Dotheymeanpeace,ordotheymean
