Whenwediscussedthetrip,mymumsaid,“Whydon’tyoutakethetrain?Whatagreatquestion!Whywouldn’twe?Wedecidedrightthentolookintoit.Wewouldweighthecostofgasandtheconvenienceofridinginsteadofdrivingforthe6-7hourtrip.Travellingbycaris340miles.Thecostofgasalonewouldbeabout$190roundtrip.Thecostofroundtriptrainticketsforustwowas$156.It’simportanttonoteherethathadIbookedtheticketsafewdaysearlier,thefarewouldhavebeenonly$135.
Thetrainarrivedontime,Wehandedinourticketsandgotinlinetoboardthetrain.Thereisnoassignedseatingonyourticket,butasyouboardthetrain,theconductorwilltellyouwheretosit.Conductorskeepgroupstogetherasmuchaspossible.
Whenitwasourturntoboard.Iinformedtheconductor“TwotoColumbia”.Hegaveustwoseatsoneithersideofamiddleaisle.Notonlydidwenothaveawindow,butwewerealsointhefrontofthecarandabrightlightaboveuslightedthedoorway.TryingtosleepwiththisbrightlightwasachallengeandIendedupputtingonmysunglasses,hopingitwouldhelp.
Wemusthavelookedpathetictryingtogetcomfortableinthoseseats,becausetheconductorcamebyandtriedtocoverthatlightwithanewspaper.Hepromisedtomoveusatthenextstop.Thenewseatswereamajorimprovementandwewereabletogetsomesleep.
