Itisn’tsurprisingthatwewanttobelievethingswillturnoutbetterifwehavepositiveattitude.Afterall,thereisagrowingbodyofresearchindicatingthatanoptimisticoutlookonlifedoeshavebenefits,suchaspromotingphysicalhealth,boostingenergy,andreducingstress.Italsoisn’tsurprisingthatwelabelcertainemotions,likeanger,guilt,fear,andbitterness,asbadbecausetheydofeelunpleasant.3
Nevertheless,itisbecomingapparentthatpositivityhasitslimits.In2021,ameta-analysiswithmorethan217,000participantsinvestigatedthelinkbetweenoptimism,pessimismandmortality.Itfoundthatanoptimisticoutlookwasindeedassociatedwiththelowerriskofdeath,however,bothunrealisticoptimismandpessimismwerelinkedtoahigherriskofdeath.4
