Synopsis
TheenigmaticvertebratePalaeospondylusgunni,fromtheMiddleDevonianofScotland,
hasbeendescribedasalarvallungfish(dipnoan),mostprobablyofthegenusDipterus.
Metamorphosiswassaidtoaccountfortheextrememorphologicaldifferencesbetweenthe
twotaxa,withdistinctsizedifferencesbetweenthem.However,thisiscontradictedbyanewly
discoveredspecimenofDipterus,thesmallestknown.Thisspecimenfallswithinthesizerange
ofthelargestP.gunnispecimens,andpossesseswell-developedtoothplates,afeaturelacking
inallspecimensofP.gunni.Juveniledipnoansofotherspeciesareknown,whichalsoshow
thatthetoothplatesdevelopinthesmallestobservableindividuals.TheoccurrenceofP.gunni
intheSandwickfishbedinOrkneyisconfirmed,anditisconfirmedtoothatitdoesnotoccur
atBaligill,Sutherland.
