Goodevening.Itismygreathonortostandbeforeyouasthejudgeofthisesteemeddebatecompetition.Iwouldliketoextendmywarmestwelcometoalltheparticipantsandaudiencemembers.Tonight,wearegatheredheretowitnessabattleofintellect,wit,andoratoryskills.Asthejudge,itismyresponsibilitytoensurethatthecompetitionisconductedfairlyandthatthebestargumentsarerecognizedandrewarded.
Beforewediveintothedetailsofthecompetition,Iwouldliketotakeamomenttoremindeveryoneoftherulesandguidelinesthatwewillbefollowingthroughouttheevening.Firstly,Iwouldliketoemphasizetheimportanceofrespect.Respectforeachother,respectfortheaudience,andrespectforthejudges.Debateisaplatformforhealthydiscussionandexchangeofideas,anditiscrucialthatwemaintainarespectfulatmospherethroughoutthecompetition.
Secondly,Iwouldliketoremindeveryoneofthetimelimitsforeachspeaker.Theopeningstatementsshouldnotexceed5minutes,therebuttalsshouldnotexceed3minutes,andtheclosingstatementsshouldnotexceed2minutes.Adheringtothesetimelimitsisessentialforthesmoothprogressionofthecompetitionandforensuringthatallparticipantshaveanequalopportunitytopresenttheirarguments.
Now,letstalkaboutthestructureofthedebate.Eachdebatewillconsistoftwoteams,eachwithtwospeakers.Thefirstteamwillpresenttheaffirmativecase,whilethesecondteamwillpresentthenegativecase.Theaffirmativeteamwillhavethefirstopportunitytospeak,followedbythenegativeteam.Aftertheopeningstatements,theteamswillengageinaseriesofcross-examinations,whereeachteamwillhavethechancetoaskquestionsoftheopposingteamsspeakers.Finally,bothteamswilldelivertheirclosingstatements.
Asjudges,ourroleistoevaluatetheargumentspresentedbyeachteam,aswellasthequalityoftheirdelivery.Wewillbelookingforse
