Goodmorning/afternoon/evening.Itismygreathonortostandbeforeyoutodaytoaddressatopicthatconcernsusall–theurgentneedtoprotectourenvironment.Thestateofourplanetisatacriticaljuncture,anditisourcollectiveresponsibilitytotakeactionandensureasustainablefutureforgenerationstocome.
Aswegatherheretoday,itisimportanttoacknowledgethesignificantprogressthathasbeenmadeinenvironmentalconservationoverthepastfewdecades.Theestablishmentofprotectedareas,thereductionofcertainpollutants,andtheincreasedawarenessofclimatechangeareallcommendableachievements.However,despitetheseefforts,thechallengeswefaceremaindaunting,andthewindowofopportunitytoreversethedamageisrapidlyclosing.
Inthisspeech,Iwilldiscussthecurrentstateofourenvironment,theconsequencesofneglectingit,andthestepswecantaketoprotectit.Iwillalsoemphasizetheimportanceofindividualandcollectiveaction,aswellastheroleofgovernments,businesses,andinternationalorganizationsinthisglobalendeavor.
TheCurrentStateofOurEnvironment
Thestateofourenvironmentis,quitesimply,alarming.TheIntergovernmentalPanelonClimateChange(IPCC)haswarnedthatweareonthebrinkofcrossingcriticalthresholdsthatcouldleadtoirreversibledamagetoourplanet.Herearesomeofthekeyissueswearefacing:
1.ClimateChange:TheEarthsaveragetemperaturehasrisenbyapproximately1.1degreesCelsiussincethelate19thcentury,primarilyduetohumanactivities.Thisriseintemperatureiscausingmorefrequentandsevereweatherevents,risingsealevels,andthelossofbiodiversity.
2.AirPollution:Airpollutionisasignificantthreattohumanhealthandtheenvironment.Itisresponsibleformillionsofprematuredeathseachyearandcontributestothedegradationofecosystems.Theburningoffossilfuels,deforestation,andindustrial
