Ihadmyfirstjobattheageofthirteen,whenafriendofmymotherswhoownedabookshophiredmeforsixhoursaweektohelpherintheshop.IwasveryproudtoearnmyownpocketmoneyandmyparentsneverinterferedwithhowIspentit,evenwhenIwasspendingitfoolishly.Theybelievedthatbyearningmoney,spendingit,andlearningfrommymistakes,Iwouldbecomemorematureandresponsibleabouthowtohandlework,relationshipswithothers,andmoney.
LikemanyAmericanparents,myparentsalsoletmeandmybrothersdothingsoverwhichtheyworriedagreatdeal.WhenIwassixteen,forexample,afterIfinishedhighschoolandbeforeIentereduniversity,IwantedtospendthesummermonthstravelingaroundEurope.Mymotherwasagainsttheideaofmytravelingaloneatsuchayoungage,butmyfatherfeltthatitwouldbeagreatexperienceforme.Intheend,myfatherwontheargumentontheconditionthatIlimitedmytravelingtoFrance,mymothershome,whereIhadmanyuncles,auntsandcousinsspreadoutthroughthecountrywhocouldprovideshelterandhelpifIneededit.
Threeyearslaterwhenhewaseighteen,myyoungerbrotherdecidedtotakeayearoffafterhisfirstyearinuniversityandtravelthroughtheUnitedStatesandtheCaribbean.Againmymotherwasveryworriedandnoteagertoseemybrotherleaveschool,butmyfatherencouragedmybrotherhadafascinatingyearworkinghiswayontrainsandshipstoearnmoneytodifferentportsandcities,anddiscoveringmanyfascinatingplacesandpeople.
ThesekindsofexperiencesareprobablyrareforchildreninmanycountriesbutintheUStheyarefairlycommon.Mostparentsstartpushingtheirchildrenatayoungagetodosmallthingsbythemselves.Bythetimetheyhavefinishedhighschool,manyAmericankidshavealreadyhadpart-timejobs,traveledaroundtheUSorothercountriesontheirown,haveselectedtheuniversitytheyplanto
