Onewaytostudytherelationshipbetweenhumourandhealthislookingatthehealthofpeoplewhousehumouraspartoftheirjobs:comediansandimprov(即兴表演)artists,forexample.Notonlydotheyusehumouraspartoftheirwork,butalsotheyshowthehighestlevelsofhumourability.Soifhumourisreallygoodforourhealth,wecananticipatethatcomediansbenefitthemostfromit.

Althoughitisoftensaidthathumourcanmakepeoplelivelonger,researchhasactuallyfoundtheoppositetobetrue.Onestudyfoundthatcomediansandhumourwritersactuallydiedyoungercomparedwithotherfamouspeoplewhowerenotperformers.However,thesestudiesweresomewhatlimited,becausemostofthecomediansweremenandalreadydead.Andmanyfamouspeopleoftenliveveryunhealthylives,andthecomediansmighthavediedfromreasonssuchasheavydrinkingorsmoking.

MycolleaguesandIdecidedtotakeadifferentway.Wecollecteddata(数据)from491improvartiststudents—224womenand267men—allalive.Wecomparedthisimprovgroupwith795noncomedians,whowerematchedinage,sex,andeducation.

Weaskedparticipantsfrombothgroupstotellushowmanydiseasestheyhadhadinthepastthreeyearsandhowlongtheyhadlasted.Theimprovartistsreportedthattheyhadhadmanymorediseases,andthatthesediseaseshadlastedlongercomparedwiththecontrolgroup.Soourstudyaddsfurtherevidencetotheconclusionmadebythestudiesbefore.
