Methods.Womenwithmastitisfromwhomcorynebac-teriawereisolatedfrombreasttissue,aspiratedpus,ordeepwoundswabsin1994–2000wereidentified,andtheircaserecordswerereviewed.Isolatesretrievablefromstockcultureswereidentifiedbyfullbiochemicaltesting,includingnitratereduction,hydrolysisofureaandesculin,fermentationofsugars,andtestingforpyrazinamidase,alkalinephosphatase,andlipophilia.NumericalprofileswereobtainedusingtheAPICORYNEkit(bioMe′rieux).Identificationwasconfirmedby16SrRNAgenesequencingandcomparisonwithsequencedataobtainedfromGenBank,andidentificationwasverifiedby2otherlaboratories.Allbreasthistologicalfindingswerereviewed.
