culturalartifacts,wasfacedwithseriousproblemsandlimitationsin
Britain.
First,manyvaluableartifactswerelosttoconstructionprojects.The
growthofBritainspopulation,especiallyfromthe1950son,spurredalotof
newconstructioninBritishcities,towns,andvillages.Whiledigging
foundationsfornewbuildings,thebuildersoftenuncoveredarchaeologically
valuablesites.Usually,however,theyproceededwiththeconstructionanddid
notpreservetheartifacts.Manyarchaeologicallypreciousartifactswere
thereforedestroyed.Second,manyarchaeologistsfeltthatthefinancialsupport
forarchaeologicalresearchwasinadequate.Formostofthetwentiethcentury,
archaeologywasfundedmostlythroughgovernmentfundsandgrants,whichallowed
archaeologiststoinvestigateahandfulofthemostimportantsitesbutwhich
lefthundredsofotherinterestingprojectswithoutsupport.Furthermore,
changinggovernmentprioritiesbroughtaboutperiodicreductionsinfunding.
Third,itwasdifficulttohaveacareerinarchaeology.Archaeologyjobs
weretobefoundatuniversitiesorwithafewgovernmentagencies,butthere
werenevermanypositionsavailable.Manypeoplewhowantedtobecome
archaeologistsendeduppursuingothercareersandcontributingto
archaeologicalresearchonlyasunpaidamateurs.
