Peoplearoundmeworefancytriathlonsuitsandwaterproofwatches.“Areyoudoingthe70.3triathlon?”Iasked.Tomysurprise,theywereallcompetingintheshorterraces.Istartedpanicking.EveryonelookedyoungerandfitterthanIwas.
IwalkedthroughthecrowdsuntilIfoundanother70.3competitor—astrongmanwhowasyoungenoughtobemyson.Myanxietyincreased,andIwasconsumedwithdoubtastowhetherIcouldevencompletetherace.
Iheardthunderasrainstartedhittingthebeach,hopingtheracewouldgetcanceled.Butanannouncerdeclaredtheweatherwasimprovingandtheracewouldsoonbegin.Withnochoicebuttoproceed,Imademywaytothestartingline.AsIswam,Irepeatedtomyself,“Don’tdrown.”Iwasbehindawomanwhoseemedtobegoingthesamespeed,soIfollowedherlead.Eventually,Iwasoutofthewater.
