conductedastudythatinvolvedusingspeakersunderwaterneardamagedcoralreefsto
makethemsoundhealthyandattractfish,potentiallystartingthenaturalrecovery
processofcoralreefsandtheirdependentlifeforms.
ThelocationofthisexperimentwastheGreatBarrierReefintheCoralSea,found
alongsidetheeastcoastofQueensland,Australia,whichisfamousforhavingthe
largestcoralreefsystemintheworldthat’s2,300kilometreslongandcoversanarea
ofnearly344,400squarekilometres.Byusingloudspeakerstoreproducesuchsounds,
areasofdeadcoralreefswerefoundtoattracttwiceasmanyfish,comparedtoplaces
wherenosoundswereplayed.Thesereturningfishcouldhelpintherecoveryofthis
ecosystembygivingthoseareasofcoralachanceofnewlife.
“Fishareimportantforcoralreefstofunctionashealthyecosystems.Increasingfish
populationsinthiswaycouldhelptostartthenaturalrecoveryprocess,reducingthe
damagewe’reseeingonmanycoralreefsaroundtheworld.Ofcourse,attractingfishto
adeadcoralreefwon’tbringitbacktolifeautomatically,buttherecoveryprocess
reliesonfishthatcleanthecoralreeftomakespaceforcoraltoregrow,”saidMark
