AnEgyptianburialchambermural,aroximately4000yearsold,showing
wrestlersinaction.Eventhoughthismayaearsimilartoaseriesofanimation
drawings,therewasnowayofviewingtheimagesinmotion.Itdoes,however,
indicatetheartistsintentionofdepictingmotion.
Earlyexamplesofattemptstocapturethe
phenomenonofmotiondrawingcanbefound
inpaleolithiccavepaintings,whereanimalsare
depictedwithmultiplelegsinsuperimposed
positions,clearlyattemptingtconveythe
perceptionofmotion.

sides.Thishasbeenclaimedtobeanexampleof
earlyanimation.However,sincenequipment
existedtshowtheimagesinmotion,sucha
seriesofimagescannotbecalledanimationina
truesenseoftheword.
AChinesezoetrope-typedevicehadbeen
inventedin180AD.Thephenakistoscope,
