MrandMrsCarr-Hartley,both38,spenttheirchildhoodlivingclosetothehouseinNairobiandhavealwaysbeenenthusiasticabouttheanimals.Tanyasaid,“MikeyandIgrewupnearthismanorhousewhenwewerechildren.WeareboththirdgenerationKenyansandhavealwayswantedtoworkinconservation.Mikey’sfamilyhavebeenrelatedtotheprotectionofanimalsformanygenerations.Hisgranddadhelpedtheremovalofgiraffesasfarbackasthe1930sbecausetheRothschildgiraffeslostmuchoftheirnaturallivingspace.Whenthehousecameupforsale,wejumpedatthechancetobuyitaswehadalwaysdreamedofowningit.Now,wewereabsolutelyoverjoyedtodosomethingforthegiraffeprotection.Havingthegiraffessocloseisveryspecialandsomethingwhichpeoplecannowexperiencebystayinginoneofthetenroomsatthehotel.”
Aconservationprojecttosavethemwasstartedatthemanorin1974bythepreviousowners.“Thepreviousownersranaverysuccessfulbreeding(生殖)programme,wheremanygiraffesweresetfreeintothewildandwehopetocontinue,”saidTanya.
